How to Find the Life-Cycle Cost of an ApplianceThis is a featured page

  1. Look at your electric bill and see how much you pay per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. multiply that by the kilowatt-hours per year under "This Model Uses" on the EnergyGuide label to find the annual operating cost of the appliance.
  2. Multiply the annual operating cost by the estimated number of years the apliance will last and you will have the total operating cost over the life of the appliance.
  3. Add to that the initial cost of hte appliance, plous any installation or maintenance fees (ask the store clerk), and you will have the total life-cycle cost of the appliance.
  4. Do Steps 1 through 3 for other brands and models to compare costs.

Note: EnergyGuide labels are based on an appliance's regular settings and don't reflect the use of any optional energy-saving or energy-guzzling features or cycles.
